About Us
The California Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc., (CAREB),
a REALTISTS® organization, was founded in 1955 to be the central
advocate for the original eight local California member boards
chartered under the National Association of Real Estate Brokers
(NAREB, founded 1947, Miami, Florida).
Although NAREB and CAREB were founded by African Americans, the
organization has lead the way and opened the doors for all
minority real estate professionals and all underserved
communities in California and the nation. During that era of the
civil rights movement they specifically demanded Democracy
Housing which included fair and equitable treatment in all
aspects of homeownership and the practice of real estate.
Some of CAREB's most significant early achievements included
participation in the creation and support of legislation like
the 1963 Rumford Act, also known as the "fair housing act",
which declared racial discrimination in sales or rentals of
housing to be against the law. CAREB led the fight against
Redlining and Restrictive Covenants. CAREB and NAREB, along with
other civil rights organizations led the fight for the Community
Reinvestment Act which led to members of CAREB being appointed
to several key California Department of Real Estate regulatory
boards and commissions and employment opportunities for
minorities in financial and lending industries. The
history
of CAREB
and our trade name, Realtist are now included in study materials
for the California real estate exam.
Today we continue to provide special educational and
professional enhancement and opportunities for our members that
directly impact the urban and minority real estate professional
and the communities and clients that REALTISTS® traditionally
serve.
Join CAREB because like you,
REALTISTS® care.
